Bakers Rack For Your Reading Pleasure

Be Healthy. . .Drink Wine

Is wine good for you? The answer is, "Yes!" There's lots of research providing proof that there really are health benefits from drinking wine.

Flavonoids from the skins and seeks of red grapes are the key to wine being good for you. These flavonoids lower your risk of coronary heart disease by reducing your LDL or bad cholesterol levels. At the same time these flavonoids actually increase your HDL or good cholesterol levels and decrease the likelihood of blood clotting.

Scientists believe that there may be other health benefits from red wine. A recent study discovered that an antioxidant in the skins of red grapes, called resveratrol, may inhibit the growth of tumors in some cancers. It's possible that resveratrol can help treat Alzheimer's and Parkinson's as well and new studies are on the way.

Are some wines better for you than others? Again, the answer is, "Yes!" Researchers at University of California at Davis have concluded that full-bodied dry red wines contain the highest levels of flavonoids and provide the greatest benefits. The number one wine for supplying the most flavonoids is Cabernet Sauvignon with Petit Syrah and Pinot Noir also ranking highly. Sweeter wines and white wines have less flavonoids and are less beneficial.

How much should you drink? Moderation is the key. Women should drink 4 ounces of red wine daily with a meal and men 4-8 ounces.

Pour yourself a glass of red wine and drink to your health. Cheers!

Pina Colada Sauce

Well, we don’t have any alcohol around the house…save for some apricot brandy from a party 5 years ago and a bottle of dry sack sherry that hasn’t been opened and was a gift to my father a couple of decades ago. You can tell…big drinkers in this house. However, this sauce may have me beg a bit of rum from someone…or see if I can find a similarly old bottle of rum extract around here. Of course, I may just leave it out entirely. From a newspaper clipping with no date… 1/2 pineapple peeled and

More Nigella Express

57 Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge Sundae Sauce I haven’t done a Nigella Express post for a while, but I’m still cooking, often repeat recipes that I’ve already blogeged about, but here is the next round up. As always (for anybody new) this is a sort of mini project I gave myself to cook a good number of dishes from Nigella Express by Nigella Lawson. The numbers in front of the recipe titles represent their number as I've posted about them (I've cooked more than this!), and again as always I don

7 Burning Belmont Questions

Fri, 06 Jun 2008 08:56:38 PDT
After undefeated Big Brown trounced the field in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, horseracing fans started to clamor that this might finally be the year we get to see another Triple Crown winner. Even before word of Big Brown’s hoof trouble started to surface, though, winning the Belmont was no small order. The venerable race and final jewel in the Triple Crown has dashed the hopes of more than a few highly touted contenders, but what makes the race so special? Here are some answers t

Can Big Brown Deliver

The Carnation is a humble flower, but if Big Brown wins the 140th running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, he will will wear a blanket of 400 white flowers to become one of only Eleven other horses to have won thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown, making it one of the most difficult accomplishments in sports. A horse is only considered a thoroughbred if you can trace their bloodlines to one of three horses; Matchen, 1748, Herod, 1758 and Eclipse, 1764. These horses are represented on the Tiff

A Visit to Cambridge

(I ask you to indulge this exceptionally long post. I had fully expected to find my old college wi-fi'ed for its students, despite its venerable 600 years of history, and was astounded to find that I could only get online via the pre-historic ethernet. Anyway, here's two marvelous days of nostalgia and perhaps a little sentiment to boot...) I sit here in the comfortable Gonville Guest Room in the Fellows’ quarters of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge... (The view of Gonville Court from
